The Federal Government has raised concerns over the increasing spread of false narratives by US-based influencers following recent comments by former American President Donald Trump about Nigeria’s leadership and foreign policy alignment.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, said the government was aware of “coordinated attempts” by certain foreign social media figures to misrepresent Nigeria’s diplomatic stance in response to Trump’s controversial statements.
“We have observed with deep concern how some influencers and media pundits based in the United States are deliberately twisting the context of Mr. Trump’s comments to create unnecessary tension,” Idris said. “Their goal appears to be to stir anti-government sentiments and portray Nigeria as a politically unstable nation, which is far from the truth.”
According to the minister, Nigeria’s foreign policy remains neutral and non-aligned, with a focus on strengthening international partnerships that promote peace, trade, and mutual respect.
He noted that while Trump’s remarks had generated debates globally, “the responsibility of Nigerian citizens and influencers alike is to verify claims and resist being used as tools for misinformation.”
Government Urges Media Responsibility
The Federal Government emphasized that disinformation campaigns, especially from outside the country, could endanger national security and diplomatic relations. Idris urged both traditional and digital media outlets to uphold journalistic ethics and avoid echoing unverified content.
“Nigeria’s relationship with the United States remains stable and mutually beneficial,” he added.“Turning personal remarks into political issues or using them to damage this relationship serves no constructive purpose.”
Officials further hinted that some of the misleading narratives were being amplified by automated bots and accounts linked to politically motivated groups seeking to manipulate global perception.

Nigeria’s Position on Trump’s Statement
Trump had earlier made remarks implying that some African nations were being “influenced by rival powers,” a comment that sparked discussions on Nigeria’s global alliances.
In response, the Federal Government clarified that Nigeria’s partnerships with world powers, including the U.S., China, and the European Union, are guided by mutual interest and respect for sovereignty.
“Nigeria is not under the influence of any foreign nation,” the minister stressed. “Our decisions are based on what benefits our people and our future.”
Diplomatic sources confirmed that Nigeria’s mission in Washington had also communicated with U.S. authorities to reaffirm the country’s commitment to maintaining transparent dialogue and cooperation.
Experts Call for Digital Awareness
Media analysts have warned that disinformation could damage Nigeria’s global image if not quickly countered. Cyber-security expert Dr. Uche Okonkwo told World Trend that “foreign influencers thrive on trending controversies” and urged the government to increase online fact-checking efforts.
He suggested the creation of a rapid-response communication unit to counter fake news in real time.
“Information warfare is now a global challenge,” Okonkwo noted. “Nigeria must invest in online intelligence to protect its narrative from distortion.”
