According to a statement, President Bola Tinubu has chosen ex-military chief Christopher Gwabin Musa to be the next Minister of Defence.
This change of guard comes after the departure of the ex-minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who quit and cited health reasons on December 1, 2025.
After the audition, President Tinubu in a letter to the Senate President, shared the name of Christopher Gwabin Musa for the green light.
The letter indicated that the president was very sure of Musa’s leadership of the Defence Ministry when the security of the nation was at a critical point.

Badaru’s resignation is timed when the Nigeria situation has not only been worsened by the insecurity challenges but also the country has witnessed increased violence, kidnappings and an emergency of national security declared by the presidency in November 2025.

Who is Christopher Musa
Christopher Musa is a 58-year-old former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) who held the position from June 2023 to October 2025. Following a wider military reshuffle that saw the change of all service chiefs, he gave up his office
His military career alone has lasted more than 30 years. After finishing at Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1991.
Among others, his former positions include counter-insurgency theatre commander, commander of various units, and director of the Army Infantry Corps.
Just in 2012, Musa was presented with the prestigious Colin Powell Award for Soldiering, a recognition of his excellent and disciplined performance in service.

What the Nomination Means
It indicates how to bring experienced and professional military leadership from the military to the security-heavy civilian arm of governance by appointing Musa as Defence Minister. The government is determined to revive trust in the defence system of Nigeria.
