Lagos APC Questions Peter Obi’s Loyalty After Trump Comment
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has fired back at former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his remarks on Nigeria’s recent designation by the United States as a Country of Particular Concern.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party’s spokesperson, Mogaji Seye Oladejo, accused Obi of constantly undermining Nigeria’s image with what he described as “politics of bitterness and resentment.”
Oladejo challenged Obi to “make a clear choice between Nigeria and desperation,” adding that no nation can grow when its political figures continue to sow division through emotional outbursts.
APC: ‘No Nation Thrives on Bitterness’
Responding to Obi’s earlier statement that blamed Nigerian leaders for the country’s diplomatic downgrade, Oladejo dismissed the former governor’s comments as another attempt to exploit national challenges for political gain.

APC Defends Nigeria’s Resilience
The Lagos APC spokesman went further to defend the country’s strength and ongoing progress under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He urged Nigerians to ignore politicians who seem to celebrate setbacks rather than contribute to solutions.
Oladejo affirmed that Nigeria’s progress will continue, regardless of those who doubt or criticize it “We urge citizens to remain focused on the Renewed Hope Agenda and reject individuals who profit politically from national challenges.”
He also reaffirmed that the government remains committed to rebuilding the economy, strengthening diplomatic relations, and promoting stability despite global criticism.
Context: U.S. Classification and Political Fallout
The controversy began when former U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly referenced Nigeria while discussing nations facing “leadership and human rights concerns.” Following that, the U.S. government reclassified Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern due to alleged violations of religious freedoms and governance issues.
Peter Obi, reacting to the development, criticized Nigeria’s political leaders for their “incompetence and failure to utilize resources for the good of citizens.” His remarks sparked widespread debate across political lines, with many APC loyalists viewing them as an attack on national integrity.
The Lagos APC’s response now adds to a growing wave of reactions defending Nigeria’s image and urging opposition figures to engage more constructively.
Oladejo Urges Unity Over Division
Concluding his statement, Oladejo appealed to Nigerians to unite in hope rather than division, stressing that progress is only possible through collective effort.
