The Federal Government has ordered the immediate closure of 47 Federal Unity Colleges across the country over rising security threats in Nigeria and growing attacks on schools.
This has elicited reactions from parents, school managers, and security experts who are worried about the increasing exposure of schools to risks. The order was conveyed through an official circular issued on Friday, which described the situation as “increased security threats in some areas with unity college.”
The document indicated that the temporary closure was to avoid any possible attacks and protect the lives of students and teachers in particular locations recently hit by banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism.
The circular further stated that the decision was approved by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who underscored that it was based on credible intelligence from security agencies.
Binta Abdulkadir, Director of Senior Secondary Education signed a memo on his behalf directing principals to shut down schools immediately.
Parents in the areas affected expressed mixed feelings: relief that their children are safe, but worry about Nigeria’s rising wave of security concerns. Many see the closure as proof of how deeply insecurity has entered communities, particularly in the North where schools have become frequent targets for abductions.

Their temporary shutdown could affect academic calendars, examinations as well as transfer processes.
The authorities insist that the protection of pupils should be the first concern above everything else.
